5th PCE Europe SYMPOSIUM September21st-24th, 2023, Athens, Greece pcesymposium2023.com Hosted by: PCE Europe & the Hellenic Focusing Center CALL FOR PAPERS We invite person-centred and experiential practitioners, researchers, theoreticians, trainers, trainees and supervisors to participate in the 2023 PCE Symposium. The Symposium will take place in person in Athens and online. “Welcoming Polyphony in a Changing World” Ιn a changing world, in a state of crisis, norms and language can't possibly mean the same as they used to; hence polyphony prevails, both in the ‘outer’ and in the ‘inner’ world, since everyone has, or should have, a voice. We invite voices loud and soft, images and sounds contained by and beyond words, from all over the European Person-Centred world to join us in creating our own ‘polyphony’. We will meet in the heart of ancient Athens, home of the Tower of the Winds, taking inspiration to unfold the many layers of our own ancient understandings, discovering new potential within ourselves both individually and as an expanding and expansive community. We are fortunate to be able to extend the invitation beyond borders to include friends and colleagues online. Keynote Speakers Four keynote speakers who have been invited to address the Symposium theme are: Manu Bazzano, Jo Hilton, Maria Malikiosi-Loizos and Siebrecht Vanhooren. See Keynotes [link] on the Symposium website. The keynote presentations will be live-streamed to online participants. Registration and Submissions Presenters must register to attend the Symposium by following the instructions for registration [link] on the Symposium website. Please note that you need to book your own accommodation and early booking of accommodation is strongly recommended. The deadline for submissions is 30 April 2023. Please be aware that, although every single offer is appreciated, submissions will be treated on the basis of their relevance to the Symposium theme. You will hear whether or not your submission has been accepted before the Early Bird registration deadline of 1 June. We encourage participants to present their work regarding the conference theme in one of two forms:
More details of how to submit your proposal is available on the Call for papers [link] page on the Symposium website. We look forward to welcoming you in person or online in September!

On the 14th of September 2014, 26 people gathered and signed the Statutes of this new Association, which had been discussed for many years, yet was able to become reality only 3 years ago. The Greek Person-Centered Community started forming in 1989 when Polly and Julius Iossifides established the Training Center for the Person-centered Approach. In addition, in 2001, the Hellenic Focusing Center started training ECP (the European Certificate of Psychotherapy) candidates in Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapy, in Focusing and in FOT. However, although the Greek Person-Centered and Experiential Community, acquired many members over the years, the establishment of a professional, not-for-profit association proved to be very difficult, because of various problems, one of them being the Greek bureaucracy and legislation. The establishment of this Association had been my dream for many years. I always thought that it is a pity that our approach doesn’t have an association here in Greece. So many students have been trained, have been deeply touched by Rogers’ and Gendlin’s theory and philosophical background, have communicated and shared deep, personal emotions, felt senses and thoughts, and then they lacked a place to stay connected. This association was approved by the Greek authorities and officially started functioning in February 2015 and had its first General Assembly in May 2015. The main goals of this not-for-profit organization are:
We have had some meetings and gatherings since then, including encounter groups. The new members’ committee together with the Board of Directors has approved many new members. Today we have 93 members. We have committees for various interests: a supervision committee, a continuing education committee, a scientific committee, an Ethics committee and a committee for Northern Greece. This association gives us the opportunity to meet, share our experience and offers us a chance to develop personally and professionally. We also had two two-day conferences. One in April 2016 with the title “The Person-centered and Experiential Approach in Greece today. Contemporary tendencies, trends, applications and practice.” There were presentations, workshops and encounter groups. This conference was welcomed by psychotherapists and counselors, mostly from the PCEA. We had about 140 people attending. We had the opportunity of meeting and sharing our professional experience. The second conference was held in October 2017 with the title “Empathy, congruence, unconditional positive regard. A contemporary interdisciplinary dialogue about the importance of the core conditions of the Person-centered and Experiential Approach”. The second conference, interdisciplinary as it was, was also welcomed by psychotherapists of various approaches and by people from other professions, teachers, doctors, artists, writers. 200 people participated, and we had a very fruitful dialogue and exchange of views and experience. Once again the importance of Rogers’ core conditions was pointed out, not only for the creation of a therapeutic relationship, but for the establishment of any helping relationship. Furthermore, the core conditions were acknowledged as important for the inner relationship of each person with oneself, and consequently important for personal development. Rogers’ theory is a contemporary theory, and can be of great use for Greek society, now that we are in the middle of a serious financial and social crisis. All we need is the emergence of the new person. This new person will be a person involved in life, with creativity, freedom of choice, interactive and caring. In other words, in Rogers’ words, a fully functioning person. This will promote personal progress and consequently progress for society, coming from the emergence of new ideas and their activation in new fields. As a society we need to find a new balance under our new circumstances, as the rule of homeostasis governs every aspect of the human existence. Elli Avgerinou, MSc, ECP

(Newberg & Waldman, 2009). PCE Europe, IFAACP Lausanne and pca.acp Switzerland are pleased to invite you to the second European PCE Symposium GROWING A PERSON-CENTERED SOCIETY IN EUROPE 15 - 17 April 2016 Lausanne, Switzerland Person-Centered and Experiential counselors and therapists know that there is great constructive potential within each person. As members of the helping professions, we can have a powerful impact on the broader socio-cultural view of the person and human development. This impact is much needed at this time. The Symposium is an opportunity to gather and think together about the huge impact PCE can have on individuals and society. We hope to stimulate contributions and reflections on the inner dynamics of the person throughout the therapeutic process, and on the cultural impact of PCE practice. We are looking forward to welcoming you in Lausanne, a charming city in an idyllic setting between the lake and the mountains. The event will take place at Swiss Tech Convention Center, a brand new building, with a futuristic design unique in Europe, which was conceived as a place to meet and exchange ideas. Translation in French and German will be assured, as far as possible, for plenary sessions and workshops.

MEN – WOMEN: MIND THE GAP! A PERSON-CENTERED PERSPECTIVE TO BUILD BRIDGES. Coordination: Avgerinou, E., Psychologist MSc, Psychotherapist Gialyraki, K., Greece During the 20th century, in western society, the role models based on gender have changed a lot. Women have entered dynamically the working environment and often the political scene of many western countries. They have developed careers in fields where men were governing until the middle of the 20th century. Due to this fact, role models have changed a lot. Traditionally, man was considered to be the main source of income for a family and the wife was usually raising the children and taking care of the household. Nowadays, things have become more complicated, there are expectations for equality in a relationship. Often these expectations are not met, leading to dissatisfaction. Furthermore, there are different ways of functioning and processing between men and women. Neuroscience research has shown that there are differences in brain size and structure between men and women. In addition to this fact, from the moment of birth, discrimination in the raising of girls and boys begins. Parents treat their children differently according to gender. Different toys, different expectations. “boys don’t cry” is an expression still used sometimes by parents and “important others” underlining this diversity. We find different styles of processing in boys and girls, and later on in life, between men and women. Some examples are the expression of feelings, ways of connecting with others, anger management, sexuality. This diversity, as well as stereotypes based on gender roles, leads to lack of communication, conflicts and alienation between men and women. Gender issues are often brought by clients during psychotherapy WORKSHOPs, rendering it necessary for us psychotherapists to deal with them. During this workshop, our aim is to elaborate gender issues and experience how the person-centered qualities of congruence, acceptance and empathy can help us understand diversity and build bridges of communication between human beings of different gender. |
